I've just finished completely redoing the South East Scotland Wargames Club website (now at seswc.co.uk) using the Wordpress blogging/web design software.

The result is that this news blog is now officially redundant, all news from now on will be carried on the main site.

Also new is an album of pictures taken at SESWC meetings here.

Claymore 2008

Claymore 2008 will be held on Saturday 2nd August, 2008, 10am - 4.30pm, Meadowbank Stadium, Edinburgh. Map here.

Details of Claymore 2007, Scotland's premier wargame show are now online at http://www.seswc.org/Claymore06.htm.

It will be held on Saturday 4th August, 2007, in Meadowbank Stadium, Edinburgh. There will be over 30 major trade stands, participation games, demonstration games and the usual bring and buy stall.

A proportion of all entrance fees will be donated to Children 1st and the Ghurka Welfare Trust.

Claymore Competitions

Osprey Publishing generously sponsored the competitions for the Best Display Game and Best Public Participation Game this year, so the winners went home with £50 Osprey gift vouchers as well as the trophies supplied by the South East Scotland Wargames Club.

Best Demonstration Game

Winner of the best display game was The Last Stand, 1939 by the League of Augsberg. This gorgeous demo was based on the Battle of Lvov, 1939.

In second place were the Iron Brigade with their demonstration Prohibition Wars. Somewhat confusingly this was a demonstration game in the morning but a public participation game in the afternoon.

In third place was this Warring States demonstration from Warhammer Historical.

Best Public Participation Game

RAF Leuchars Wargames Association's Bloody Omaha won them the SESWC Trophy and a £50 gift voucher from Osprey.

Urban Mammoth won second prize in this category with their Urban Wars participation game.

Third Prize went to Dingwall Wargames Club with a game which also featured urban fighting, this time on the Eastern Front during WWII.

SESWC in Wargames Illustrated

SESWC features strongly in the August edition of Wargames
Illustrated. Firstly we have our full page add for Claymore, then a
series of pics taken by Derek Hodge of Vietnam troops painted by Angus
Konstam and Dougie Trail. Next in line we have a couple of
pics of the display game that Colin Jack and Dave O'Brien put on at Partizan.
Finally the back page has some lovely Sassanid Persians painted by
Brian Philips, our latest club member.

Ainsty Castings have cancelled and have been replaced by Hersant Military Books and Companion Miniatures. Ellerburn Armies, Scheltrum, Old Crow Models and SHQ have all confirmed that they will be attending.

Several clubs have confirmed that they will be bringing demonstration or public participation games.

Our Sunday meetings take place on the first Sunday of the month run from 12 until about 5. This gives members a chance to play bigger and longer games than are possible at a normal clubnight.

Chiltern Miniatures, Command Post (Dave Thomas), Newline Design, S&A Scenics, and Bear's Den Miniatures have all confirmed that they will be attending.

Lancashire Games a long time attender at Claymore can't make it this year. S&A Scenics will be bringing a LIMITED stock of Lancashire Games stuff with them.

Rat Patrol Radio

Whilst browsing round the web looking for stuff about the Desert War in WWII I came across an internet radio station called Rat Patrol Radio which broadcasts music from the 1940's interspersed with the occasional news piece from wartime radio. Great stuff for inspiration.

It's available here and is just the thing to listen to while painting your WWII Allied figures.

Warhammer Historical will be presenting a display game using the forthcoming Art of War supplement for Warhammer Ancient Battles.

Dingwall Wargames Club will be running an Eastern Front WWII participation game.

Police vs gangsters using the Legend of the Old West rules.

Grand Armee using Ros Heroics 6mm figures. The game is being played using 2" square bases rather than the 3" squares specified in the rules. This allows you to fight bigger battles on any given size of table and also requires fewer models.

Byzantines from a game of Warhammer Ancient Battles. These rules are very popular in the club at the moment and there's usually at least three or four games every week.

Nortung: a Dark Ages campaign day.

A small but select group of gamers (some even travelling from foreign climes: Fife and Glasgow) gathered at the South East Scotland Wargames Club last Sunday (26th March 2006) for Nortung, a rampage through the Dark Ages.

The event was set up as a mini-campaign with every player taking part in three games - each game having an affect on the next. All terrain was randomly fixed prior to play. Two army lists, one small 500pt scouting force and a much larger 1500pt main body, were drawn up from just threeWarhammer Historical supplements pertinent to the period: Shieldwall (Vikings, English, Scots, Norman, etc.); El Cid (Christian Spanish, Almoravids, Almohads, etc.); Byzantium, Beyond the Golden Gate (Early, Middle and Late Byzantine, Sassanid Persians, Rus, Steppe Nomads, etc.)

Players were semi-randomly paired up for their first battle: a limited-turn skirmish affair simulating a scouting action in advance of the main body. The winner of this encounter took forward a positive `event' to the second battle.

Points gained (or not in far too many cases) from the scouting clash were used to determine the combatants for the next battle, the coming together of the larger main bodies. This was a standard Pitched battle, though slightly extended to give a more definite result.

After a break for food and some realigning of tables, players were paired up for a two-on-two battle. This was based on their accumulated points score. Each player brought his two army lists together into one force for a mega 4000pt game. The points leader for each pair became overall general, deciding strategy etc. All points gained from this battle were shared equally between allied generals, and then all points were tallied up.

After some eight hours of gaming, drinking, blethering and good- natured ribbing, we finally came to the prize-giving ceremony for the top three players. Our congratulations (and envy) go to them.

I have now set up a Web based discussion board for SESWC members. It's at http://bsoutheastscotlandwargamesclub.runboard.com/

As things are set up at the moment anyone who knows the address can read what's written there but people wanting to post messages will have to sign up.

To do this you will first have to create a Runboard account for yourself. Go to www.runboard.com click on Register and fill out the form. You will have to provide a valid email address and they will send you an email with a link needed to activate your account.

After doing this you should l ogin to Runboard, go to the SESWC Discusssion Board and then try to make a posting. You will not be allowed to post but you will be asked to fill in a form which will allow a moderator to sign you up. Please tell us who you are in this form as I'm not psychic.

I know this is a bit inconvenient and it would be much easier if access was just free for all, but if I did that we would be battered to death by a ton of spam.

Gents, once again we have been asked by the Newark Irregulars to put on a
display game at Partizan - this year being held on Sunday 21st May.  Colin
and I have already agreed to put on an 8'x6' Freikorps game,  but just in case
anyone else wants to put on a display instead then please contact me.
